If you are anything like us, “core” is a term that is becoming more regularly used in your style vocabulary. If you haven’t heard this term yet, it’s used to describe certain aesthetics (the look you create with clothing)…. and it can get pretty specific. And if you know what we are talking about, we can still guarantee you have only scratched the surface, and new cores are popping up as we speak (type, but you get the idea). It’s opening our eyes to an entirely new set of niches. Here are some examples:
We’ve included links to much longer and more detailed examples at the end of this piece.
Essentially, “insert keyword here”-core. It seems complicated…..but there are some things we love about exploring style through this lens.
1. Something for everyone👽
Like goblins? What about mermaids? Something more “soft”? There are “cores” that every single person can connect to. Look at cores you love and see what elements you can pull to include in creating what works for you. When we talked about finding your personal style, we discussed the importance of taking risks, and some of the cores you look at will provide an opportunity to do exactly that.
2. Connects to things unique to you💫
Our style is how we express ourselves visually. Having this take on things can seem overwhelming… and can feel like a lot of pressure... but it can also be very powerful! You can share your passions, interests, mood, etc. through style and the endless cores available. It allows your style to remain authentic to you, so trends can be less tempting. Once you narrow down the cores you like and the aesthetics that go along with them, you might find it also impacts other elements of your life, like your decoratives tastes and even what you are passionate about.
3. Can be healing ❤️🩹
Style, more importantly, your personal style, can be extremely healing and therapeutic. Specific cores might connect to things that brought you joy when you were younger, connecting yourself to your inner child. We can romanticize our own lives by dressing in outfits that make us feel confident and give us main character energy. Style is a way to celebrate and embrace your individuality and exploring different cores introduces us to more and more looks that resonate with this.
4. Helps you narrow in on inspiration⭐️
When you find cores that you love, this allows you to be more specific with your inspiration. It can impact who to follow, where to look, and what to search. On social media we can be exposed to endless amounts of looks, products and inspiration…and chances are, they look great! But when you haven’t found your personal style yet, it’s tempting to act on this and buy things because you like them on someone else, and not because they are true to your style.
5. Find and combine what you love 💖
Disclaimer… you do not have to choose just one!!! We don’t need to be categorized into a single look. Find cores you love and take specific elements of each that work for you. While you explore you can keep all your basics the same and change up simple pieces and accessorize to create the looks.
6. The more vocab the merrier🔠
We love new words that make things easier to explain. Taking a deeper dive into the world of cores will allow you to express your look verbally, and then once it’s on, you can let the clothes do the talking.
It’s time to start exploring cores! We have selected some lists for you to look through here, here, and here. As you explore, you will want to document your style “experiments”. When you’ve created a look you like, take photos of outfits on you, and save them to your notes app. On days you’re stuck, you’ll have something like this to look back at.
